A Brief History of Ebooks
In 1440, a German man by the name of Johannes Gutenberg invented a process, which allowed books to be copied quickly and cheaply. With dawn of the computer age, a new form of book production was created: the electronic book.
It all began in 1971 when a man by the name of Michael Hart was given an operator’s account $100,000,000 of computer time. This time was given by the operators of the Xerox Sigma V mainframe at the Materials Research Labs at the University of Illinois. Hart decided that he would take these funds and with the use of the computer he developed a storage, retrieval, and library search system from which he created the first “Etext” or as Hart called it “Ebook”
Thus the ebook was created.
In the late 90’s the corporate world caught on to Hart’s idea and created online ebook stores. These online eBook stores, which provide recently published and popular books for a fee, sprung up all over the net. With popularity of the internet and the move to other digital forms media such as mp3 for music and DVDs for movies, many companies, put their money into eBooks hoping to make huge profits.
However by 2003, some businesses found that the demand was not what they had predicted, and they could not afford to keep their eBook stores open. For example, Gemstar, a popular maker of eBook devices which also uses it’s own eBook format, closed its doors in July of 2003. Barnes & Noble stop selling eBooks on its online store that same year.
Today the sale of eBooks is far smaller than for their paper bound counterpart. According to a public release from the Association of American Publishers, the United States publishing industry had a grand total of $23.72 billion in net sales for 2004, while the total sales of eBooks averages a mere $12 million to $15 million a year.
Advantages
Ebooks are easily obtainable from the internet. You don't have to leave your home, thus saving time and money. All one has to do is go on the internet, choose any one of their favorite search engines and do a search on the topic of choice.
One of the top sources for ebooks(digital products) is ClickBank. ClickBank is the Internet's largest digital marketplace, where thousands of the web's most popular products are sold every day.
There are very few topics or subjects that are not covered by ebooks. There are a lot of free ebooks that give great information or instructions on your favorite subjects. All you have to do is go on your favorite search engine and do a search on Free "Your Topic" + Ebooks and you will be amazed at how much information is out there.
However not all ebooks are free.
To get Top Ebooks on current topics such as courses, instruction,internet tools and all sorts of topics you will probably have pay a price, which could be from 10 cents to hundreds of dollars.
